SUMMARY:Informal Learning – Where Learning\, Life\, and Technology Converge
DESCRIPTION:The Harvard Club of Ottawa is pleased to welcome Harvard Senior Lecturer and Faculty Chair of Learning Design\, Innovation\, and Technology\, Prof. Joe Blatt for a talk about informal learning in childhood and beyond. Please join us at Elmwood School\, who have generously offered to be our venue partner and will be hosting refreshments following the talk. \n\n\n\nProf. Blatt’s Talk Description: \n\n\n\nThroughout our lives – even in childhood and adolescence – we learn more in the time we spend outside school than in the classroom. Like the Bourgeois Gentilhomme in Moliere’s play\, we are often learning even when we don’t know we are doing it. In this presentation I will explore the world of informal learning: what it looks like\, how it happens\, and what educators can do to take advantage of it. I will illustrate how informal learning\, both deliberate and unconscious\, suffuses our lives\, and how this phenomenon has particular impact and unique potential in childhood. Among the questions I plan to tackle: What are the avenues through which children and young people experience informal learning? Technology is a ubiquitous and powerful informal learning source for children and young people – so how can we distinguish between media that enrich their social and cognitive development and media that are a potential threat to healthy growing up? What lies behind the documented success of Sesame Street\, now more than 50 years old and still spreading to new regions of the globe? What roles can parents play in helping children get a head start on learning – and does this really matter in the long run? I plan to speculate briefly on the future of the promising but also fraught relationship between technology and children’s healthy development\, and I hope to engage participants in discussion\, reflection\, and interaction. \n\n\n\nApps to Download: \n\n\n\nYou are welcomed to download the following two apps that will be discussed and demonstrated during the talk. They are available in both the App Store and Google Play. \n\n\n\n– Small Wonders for Families \n\n\n\n– Animal Antics for Families. https://www.gse.harvard.edu/apps/early-literacy

SUMMARY:Book Club: Speak\, Silence with Kim Echlin
DESCRIPTION:The Harvard Club of Ottawa Book Club virtually welcomes Kim Echlin to speak about her new novel\, Speak\, Silence. While framed in fiction\, the carefully researched book details intimate stories from women who lived through the Bosnian war and its aftermath.  From the point of view of a journalist\, it tells stories of sexual violence that were bravely laid bare at the Hague\, resulting in the declaration of rape as a war crime for the first time.  \n\n\n\nAs the book jacket eloquently states\, “In a heart-wrenching tale of suffering and loss and a beautiful illustration of power and love\, Echlin explores what it means to speak out against the very people who would do anything to silence you.” \n\n\n\nMembers are encouraged to purchase the novel in advance and review the resources below to join in the discussion\, although this is not required.  We’ll hear from Kim about her research and writing and offer the opportunity for small group dialogue with the author.

SUMMARY:Freedom to Sanction
DESCRIPTION:The geopolitical implications of Canada’s renewable energy agenda\n\n\n\nSynopsis: The Russian invasion of Ukraine reveals the tangible implications of sanctioning an oil producing country. While the current sanctions are clearly impacting Canada’s economy\, including prices at the pump\, this is not the first time that international politics with an oil producing country have been clouded by an economic reliance on energy. What are Canada’s renewable energy ambitions and how will achieving them impact international relations with Russia and other oil-rich nations? Can renewable energy be the key to shifting the balance of power? \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Jaime Webbe\, President and CEO of the United Nations Association in Canada (UNAC) \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Jaime Webbe is the President and CEO of the United Nations Association in Canada. Previously she led Canada’s International Resources and Development Institute with her international experience spanning a number of UN agencies\, including the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN). At the CTCN Jaime explored the technologies required to achieve a low emission resilient future\, expertise that she brings to this discussion on the geo-political implications of a shift to renewable energy. \n\n\n\nPlease register on Eventbrite for this online event: \n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Dr. Ann Fitz-Gerald
DESCRIPTION:Can Western Democracies Contain Rising Authoritarianism from the East?\n\n\n\nIn this lecture\, Dr. Fitz-Gerald discusses how democratic countries (typically hesitant to use “hard power”) can cope with authoritarianism rising from the East\, where “hard power” is a dominant strategy. Dr. Fitz-Gerald will explore this theme by looking at a number of contemporary issues\, such as: Canada-China relations\, US withdrawal from Afghanistan\, and the current troubles in Ukraine. Are Western countries (other than the U.S.) willing to respond to increasingly belligerent military regimes from the East? \n\n\n\nAnn Fitz-Gerald is the Director of the Balsillie School of International Affairs and a Professor in Wilfrid Laurier University’s Political Science Department. She has worked at both at King’s College\, London University’s International Policy Institute\, and at Cranfield University\, where she was the Director\, Defence and Security Leadership. Ann is widely published on issues concerning international peace and security and conflict studies\, with a particular focus on Africa. She is a Visiting Professor at a number of African universities and is part of the United Nations’ Global Female Talent Pipeline cadre. Ann has advised\, and has been seconded to work with\, a number of countries on issues relating to national security policy/strategy issues including Ukraine\, Lebanon\, Canada\, Ethiopia\, Afghanistan\, Nepal\, Botswana\, Jamaica\, Sierra Leone\, Albania\, Montenegro and Nigeria. She is currently facilitating the development of the Gambian defence policy. Ann also supported H.E Thabo Mbeki’s African Union High Implementation Panel during the post-referendum peace talks between North and South Sudan. In 2011\, Ann returned to Canada to be the McNaughton-Vanier Visiting Professor at the Royal Military College of Canada. In 2013\, she became a Senior Security and Justice Adviser for the UK Government. In 2018\, Ann was appointed as a Senior Research Associate at the Royal United Services Institute in London.
