Then\, at 7:30pm\, we will turn the mic over to Harvard fellow Flynn Coleman\, who will discuss her new book “A Human Algorithm: How #ArtificialIntelligence Is Redefining Who We Are”.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this fireside conversation\, Flynn Coleman will discuss her new book A Human Algorithm: How Artificial Intelligence Is Redefining Who We Are\, a groundbreaking narrative on the urgency of humanely designed AI and a guidebook to reimagining life in the era of intelligent technology. International human rights attorney Flynn Coleman examines the immense impact intelligent technology will have on humanity. She argues that it is critical that we instill values\, ethics\, and morals into our robots\, algorithms\, and other forms of AI. Equally important\, we need to develop and implement laws\, policies\, and oversight mechanisms to protect us from tech’s insidious threats. Ultimately\, A Human Algorithm calls us to action to build a more humane future and move conscientiously into a new frontier of our own design. \n\n\n\nFlynn Coleman is a writer\, international human rights attorney\, a fellow at Harvard and Yale\, public speaker and social innovator. She has worked with the United Nations\, the United States federal government\, and international corporations and human rights organizations around the world. SUMMARY:Dr. Ann Fitz-Gerald
DESCRIPTION:Can Western Democracies Contain Rising Authoritarianism from the East?\n\n\n\nIn this lecture\, Dr. Fitz-Gerald discusses how democratic countries (typically hesitant to use “hard power”) can cope with authoritarianism rising from the East\, where “hard power” is a dominant strategy. Dr. Fitz-Gerald will explore this theme by looking at a number of contemporary issues\, such as: Canada-China relations\, US withdrawal from Afghanistan\, and the current troubles in Ukraine. Are Western countries (other than the U.S.) willing to respond to increasingly belligerent military regimes from the East? \n\n\n\nAnn Fitz-Gerald is the Director of the Balsillie School of International Affairs and a Professor in Wilfrid Laurier University’s Political Science Department. She has worked at both at King’s College\, London University’s International Policy Institute\, and at Cranfield University\, where she was the Director\, Defence and Security Leadership. Ann is widely published on issues concerning international peace and security and conflict studies\, with a particular focus on Africa. She is a Visiting Professor at a number of African universities and is part of the United Nations’ Global Female Talent Pipeline cadre. Ann has advised\, and has been seconded to work with\, a number of countries on issues relating to national security policy/strategy issues including Ukraine\, Lebanon\, Canada\, Ethiopia\, Afghanistan\, Nepal\, Botswana\, Jamaica\, Sierra Leone\, Albania\, Montenegro and Nigeria. She is currently facilitating the development of the Gambian defence policy. Ann also supported H.E Thabo Mbeki’s African Union High Implementation Panel during the post-referendum peace talks between North and South Sudan. In 2011\, Ann returned to Canada to be the McNaughton-Vanier Visiting Professor at the Royal Military College of Canada. In 2013\, she became a Senior Security and Justice Adviser for the UK Government. In 2018\, Ann was appointed as a Senior Research Associate at the Royal United Services Institute in London. SUMMARY:Book Club on "Bush Runner: The Adventures of Pierre-Esprit Radisson"
DESCRIPTION:The Harvard Club of Ottawa Book Club is pleased to host the 2020 Taylor Prize winner for non-fiction: local writer\, historian\, political commentator\, and lawyer\, Mark Bourrie. Join us virtually on Sunday\, April 18\, 2021 at 7:00pm to discuss his book\, Bush Runner: The Adventures of Pierre-Esprit Radisson. \n\n\n\n\nThe story is at once familiar\, touching Canada’s shores and storied institutions like the Hudson’s Bay Company and the Radisson name: “They finally let up on this gruelling pace by resting at the confluence of the Gatineau\, Rideau\, and Ottawa Rivers\, and camped near Lake Leamy on the north shore across from the cliffs where the home of Canada’s prime minister now looms (p. 124).” \n\n\n\nAt the same time\, it portrays a vastly different world hidden in our history: “That night\, Radisson and some of the Odawa broiled and stewed the flesh of some of the slain Iroquois\, then\, after filling their bellies\, built the cooking fire much higher and burned the bodies of the dead Odawa\, giving them an honour reserved for the best warriors (p. 123).” \n\n\n\nMark portrays a remarkable and roguish Canadian in a story that is truly wilder than fiction. Hear him talk about his research\, writing method\, and how he brought his protagonist to life. SUMMARY:In conversation with Mark Carney: How to build a better world post-COVID
DESCRIPTION:Dr Mark Carney is UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance and Prime Minister Johnson’s Finance Adviser for COP26. He was previously Governor of the Bank of England (from 2013 to 2020)\, and Governor of the Bank of Canada (from 2008 to 2013). Dr Carney has been nominated as a candidate for the Harvard Board of Overseers\, with the elections taking place this April. His greatly anticipated book\, Value(s) Building a Better World for All\, is going to be published on March 16th 2021. \n\n\n\nThroughout his illustrious career\, he has faced some of the greatest economic and societal challenges in recent history: the global financial crash\, Brexit while at the Bank of England\, and the health and economics crisis brought on by Covid-19. He is a long-time and well-known advocate for sustainability\, specifically with regard to the management and reduction of climate risks. He brings together his vast international experience and expertise in his new book Value(s) Building a Better World for All. \n\n\n\nDr Carney was born in Fort Smith\, Northwest Territories\, Canada. He received a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Harvard University in 1988 and went on to receive a master’s degree and doctorate in Economics from Oxford University. In this event\, the Harvard Club of Ottawa is pleased to welcome Dr Carney back to Ottawa and to discuss the ideas presented in his new book Value(s) Building a Better World for All.
