Freedom to Sanction

March 30, 2022 @ 7:00 pm

The geopolitical implications of Canada’s renewable energy agenda

Synopsis: The Russian invasion of Ukraine reveals the tangible implications of sanctioning an oil producing country. While the current sanctions are clearly impacting Canada’s economy, including prices at the pump, this is not the first time that international politics with an oil producing country have been clouded by an economic reliance on energy. What are Canada’s renewable energy ambitions and how will achieving them impact international relations with Russia and other oil-rich nations? Can renewable energy be the key to shifting the balance of power?

Speaker: Jaime Webbe, President and CEO of the United Nations Association in Canada (UNAC)

Speaker Bio: Jaime Webbe is the President and CEO of the United Nations Association in Canada. Previously she led Canada’s International Resources and Development Institute with her international experience spanning a number of UN agencies, including the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN). At the CTCN Jaime explored the technologies required to achieve a low emission resilient future, expertise that she brings to this discussion on the geo-political implications of a shift to renewable energy.
